I've spent the past few days exploring England. I really am excited about the trip. I know no one there. I know no one from there. I found a cool site (rainbowholidays) that has a search/locator/booking service to connect folks to gay friendly lodgings, mostly in London. That's ok. If anyone has any recommendations, please pipe up! Since we'll only be there a week, and I'd rather see a few things well than many at a glance, I/we have decided to stick to the southern end of the island this time. Northern England and Scotland will have to wait for the next time. My wants are Watford (where my family's from -- it's outside of London), Verulamium (which is an important Roman settlement near Watford), Salisbury and Avebury, and I suppose Bath while in that neck of the woods. I had also wanted to get to York, Lindisfarne, Hadrian's Wall, and as far north as I could get from there. At least to Inverness. I have no interest in Ireland. Can't say why. Isle of Man, yes, but that's because, I suspect, they're so spunky. My linguistic interests also probably spur me. I can't recall, but I believe Manx, and Cornish, and Welsh for the most part are in their death throes. Scots Gaelic too. Not to mention Scots English. (Lowland, Highland, Picts, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, the Daneslaw, migrations, resilience (linguistic)... the Isles have a very long, confusing, and muddled linguistic history. I'm very into it!)
I love it and want to experience all of it. Can't in a week, of course, so I'll be happy to see a few of my longed to see sites. Shit like the V&A, which I'd like to see, which would take a week in itself, will have to wait. Shit, they've waited this long!
The LO and I are doing fine. Better than in a long time, actually. I've started doing things around the joint that need doing. I get into funks where I can't do anything. I stare. I wait. My father's step-mother died yesterday. She was 95. She'd been way Alzheimers (sp?) for many years. I'm not going up for the funeral. She was a loving and talented woman.
There were a few other things I wanted to write, but they're gone at the moment.
